In late 2004, artist Khoo Sui Hoe decided to pave his plans to return to Malaysia, and to establish a dedicated art gallery in China Street, in the historical heart of Georgetown. The gallery will be formally launched this year with special exhibiiton by key artists and also with a major retrospective collection of Sui Hoe’s work, which will also be scheduled for touring to other galleries in SEA and China. The gallery will welcome support and shows by new faces and fresh talent in art.

Sui Hoe is currently based in the US where he has build up a strong artistic reputation, but his effective return will be appreaciated by his friends and collectors who have known of his tireless catalytic efforts for art, including the founding of the legendary ALPHA GALLERY in Singapore from 1970, holding away for two decades, with the support of his artistic contemporaries. In 1977, with 7 other major painters in North Malaysia, he initiated the UTARA GROUP. With this background, the name of the new gallery - ALPHA UTARA is explained. It aims to make a significant contribution to the development of serious art appreciation - as well as artistic standards, i.e. ART itself - in Penang and North Malaysia - and indeed nationally and globally.
