Born 1944 in Penang. Studied at Sir John Cass of Art in London  1966-68; continue at South Bank University 1968 – 1971; Awarded 2nd Prize ‘Development of North Malaya’ Art Competition 1972;1st Prize ‘All London Logo Competition’ 1969 and ‘Outstanding Newcomer’ Award at the Royal Watercolour Society, London 1995. James Sum held 4 solos in London (Promenade Gallery 1983; long Gallery, 1984; Collection Dix-Sept Galley, 1990 and Hyde Park gallery, 1995) and one in China (Wang Fung Art gallery, Beijing, 1997). His group shows including those in Malaysia by the Penang Chinese Art Association in 1958, the Penang Art Society in 1959, the Malaysia Art Society in 1960. In London he took part at the Summer Exhibition organized by the Royal Academy of Art in 1976, 1995, 1998; the Haringey Art Society show in 1984, the Christies Summer Sales in London and Paris in 1996, 1997. Sum began to show at ‘Wind Beneath the Bell’ exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in 2001, at the Penang State Art Gallery for International Chung Ling Artists’ Invitational in 2002 and ‘World Class Chinese Art & calligraphy held in Guangzhou, China in 2002. His landscapes are painted both in oils and inks on rice paper. He aims to harmonize techniques between East and West.
