Qwek Wee Chew/ 郭维洲 (b. 1934)

Singaporean painter Qwek Wee Chew has been regarded as one of the foremost still life painters of Singapore. He was an eminent student of both Cheong Soo Pieng (钟四宾) and Chen Wen Hsi (陈文希), and his vintage works have a masterly quality that is indeed unique. He ceased to paint for several years in his dedication as a temple keeper, and his earlier works have therefore become rare collector’s items.

A few years ago he was urged to paint again, and the splendid results can now be seen in a special and exclusive online exhibition of 7 recent works, which will reveal that he has retained and further matured his artistic vision and touch, in a consistent stylistic reprise.

“Qwek Wee Chew is Singapore’s most outstanding painter of still life, overdue for international recognition for his exquisite and ethereal paintings, whose most recent works bear out the total mastery and continuing integrity of his artistic vision.”

— Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat

“Qwek Wee Chew’s still life is influenced by Cheong Soo Pieng’s landscape. Qwek’s vase and vegetation were painted as if suspended, with no relation to the background. Qwek applies colours onto canvas using a brush in the Chinese technique.”

— Marjorie Chu from Singapore Art Museum.
